Long before the war on drugs was introduced during the Nixon era. Hemp tea is used for relaxation as well as its many healing properties. Hemp was used by humans 10,000 years ago as a fabric. Hemp became lost in a classification of a class C drug. What else was lost was the health benefits of hemp and cannabis products. Hemp tea is one of the ways to get those health benefits.
What we are seeing today is a re-evaluation of a plant. A plant wrongfully classified and now placed in a healing category. State by state is now taking another look at cannabis and hemp products. The question “Does weed tea make you high”? Is becoming clearer and clearer.
It’s an interesting industry with different judgments. In different courts at different levels. Hemp is now considered legal but hemp tea is not. The reason hemp tea is considered illegal is the extraction of the leaf. Which may contain trace amounts of THC.
It’s a grey area that is changing rapidly state by state. Check your state for legislation.
Things to consider before consuming hemp tea
One of the concerns about drinking hemp tea is the presence of THC. THC is the component in cannabis that causes the “high”. While most CBD products do not contain THC. There is a concern for those that work in certain fields (nursing, law enforcement, teaching) that are prohibited from consuming THC. Because there is no way to prove 120% that THC is not present in a CBD product. It could be detrimental to the prohibited employee. Some have even lost their jobs because of it.
Another downfall of the hemp plant is eating it, whole. Not advisable. Eating the plant can cause mouth irritation as well as throat irritation. It can also cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, slow heart rate, or high blood pressure.
Dizziness can be a downfall when partaking in a cup of hemp tea.
Hemp tea may cause a bad taste sensation and a dry mouth.
Eating the seeds is not considered as unsafe. But may cause mild diarrhea because of their high-fat content.
If you are taking cardiac glycosides or diuretics do not ingest hemp. It may have a counter effect with the medications.
Presenting Hemp
Hemp tea is a hot infusion of the Cannabis sativa plant. The hemp plant is a cousin of the cannabis plant. The hemp plant originates from the Indian subcontinent. As well as Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. You can make hemp tea from the crushed hemp flower, seeds, and leaves. Adding the hemp into hot water where it is infused. Then adding a bit of fat into the hot water enables the CBD to be absorbed by the body. There is always a chance that THC can be present in a urine test.
Don’t let anyone tell you differently. There is always a chance that THC can be present. Some people are worried about a hemp oil high. Hemp oil will not get you high.
The difference between hemp and cannabis is that cannabis tea contains all the THC. You also get that high feeling effect. If you are looking to just relax without getting high, look to hemp tea.
Hemp tea is not a tea but a tisane, an herbal infusion. Hemp tea has a greenish hue and a more herbal scent. The scent is caused by the terpenes in the plant.
CBD is cannabidiol. It is the active ingredient and the 2nd most active ingredient. It is taken directly from the hemp plant, a cousin of the marijuana plant. CBD is essential in medical marijuana and does not cause a high.
To brew hemp tea you need to decide if you want more or less CBD. Brewing young hemp gives you less and a mature hemp plant will give you more CBD. Neither will have enough of the THC to get you high. The benefits of the plant will still be prominent.
There are different sets of health benefits depending on what plant you choose.
Features & Benefits
While documentation of the benefits of hemp is not well known. There are many benefits that are shown in documentaries. The most eye-opening documentary for me about the benefits of cannabis is “The Sacred Plant”. That can be found on Facebook
Hemp contains a wealth of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. This is much like the herbal teas we drink every day. The most prominent of these is CBD, cannabidiol. Unlike THC, CBD does not have any side effects.
Mature plant:
Anxiety – While the THC in marijuana causes anxiety, hemp tea with CBD causes anxiolytics effects. Calming and regulating mood and social behavior.
Relieving nausea – The cannabinoids in hemp tea help relieve abdominal muscle cramps and ease the feelings of nausea.
Calming chronic pain – Hemp tea produces endocannabinoids which naturally relieve pain. Binding to receptors in the nervous system and reducing certain forms of pain.
Improves heart health – helping the heart through anti-inflammatory properties. CBD can cause higher blood pressure. There are other properties of hemp tea to help with our heart health.
Reduce inflammation – Hemp tea works as an anti-inflammatory agent because of the contents of CBD.
Helps prevent symptoms of epilepsy – There is evidence in clinical studies showing that hemp tea helps control seizures. These are preliminary tests but promising.
Parkinson’s – Hemp oil helps improve sleep and increases appetite. Some say that CBD in hemp oil calms muscle tension and protects nerve cells and neurons.
Helps Alzheimer’s – More research is needed. Some research shows that hemp tea can help relieve the agitation and aggression that accompanies Dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Young Plant
Increased red blood cell count – Helping with symptoms of anemia hemp tea helps by working with receptors present in our endocannabinoid system. This provides relief to various bodily functions.
Body detox – CBD in Hemp tea contains helpful ingredients that help the body rid itself of toxins, enhance organ functions, and reduce or regulate stress.
Balance hormones – restoring harmony and balance in the body is a job for the CBD in hemp tea. Balancing the body and easing symptoms that make you feel out of sorts.
Kidney stones – while CBD cannot remove kidney stones it can relax the body and the urinary tubes, with fewer spasms, less pain. Hemp tea also acts as an analgesic to ease the pain of passing a stone.
Boost immunity – Hemp tea contains antioxidants that help boost the immune system.
Improve gastrointestinal function – relieving symptoms of IBS by decreasing inflammation offering some relief to the irritable bowel.
Strengthen bones – New studies are showing that the cells in our bones express cannabinoid receptors because of that the CBD plays an important role in the regulation of bone strength.
Homemade Hemp Tea:
- Use 1 teaspoon of dry hemp or cannabis leaves per 1 cup of water
- Put the plant matter into an empty, pleated tea bag and close it
- Pour boiling water over the bag of plant matter
- Let it steep in the hot water for 5 minutes
If you want to add some flavor you can try adding some additional ingredients like honey, cinnamon, anise, and vanilla. Remember, you need to add a fat in there for the cannabinoids to fully mix into the beverage. Coconut oil, milk, butter, or cream are all good choices.
Make sure to only choose quality hemp flowers, organic and clean of pesticides!
Making cannabis tea is more of an infusion. If you just boil the leaves you will not get as much of the THC. THC is not water-soluble. In order to get the THC, you have to cook the leaves with an oil (coconut) or butter making a tincture then adding it to a beverage.
You can also make the tea from the roots that are fresh from either plant but it requires a lot more preparation.
There is a total science to preparing hemp tea. You will not get as much of the “high” effect because you are not using the infusion with the oil method. The method of decarboxylating is when you brew your tea using an optimal time and temperature for maximum results.
